💷 Getting Paid and Paying Tax in the UK
🧾 National Minimum Wage
In the UK, there is a national minimum wage. This means there is a lowest amount of money that workers must be paid. It is illegal for an employer to pay you less than this. The amount (called the rate) depends on your age:
- People under 25 get a different rate than those 25 and over.
- The minimum wage rate changes every April.

💰 Tax and National Insurance
If you live and work in the UK, you will need to pay tax on the money you earn.
🧑💼 If you are employed:
- Your employer will take the tax from your wages automatically.
- This is called Income Tax.
- You will also pay National Insurance (NI).
👨🔧 If you are self-employed:
- You must arrange your own tax payments.
- You do this by filling out a Self Assessment tax return.
ℹ️ National Insurance (NI)
You may need to pay National Insurance unless:
- You can prove you already pay it in another EEA country, or
- You’re from a country that has a social security agreement with the UK.
💡 Your employer must give you a payslip every time you get paid. This payslip shows:
- How much you earned 💵
- How much tax you paid 🧾
- How much National Insurance you paid 🏥
