📄 What You Need to Know About Your Asylum Decision Letter

When your asylum claim is decided, you will get an important letter from the Home Office 📨. This letter is called a “Determination of Asylum Claim”. This letter tells you:

  • ✅ What decision has been made about your asylum case
  • ✅ What type of immigration status you now have
  • ✅ The date the decision was made

🛂 What Immigration Status Did You Get?

Your letter will say that you now have one of these four types of status:

  1. 🟢 Refugee Status
  2. 🟡 Humanitarian Protection
  3. 🔵 Discretionary Leave to Remain
  4. Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Each status means you can stay in the UK, but the rules and time limits are a bit different for each one.

💳 What Happens Next? Say Hello to Your eVisa

The UK no longer issues physical BRP cards. Instead, everyone now uses an eVisa—a digital visa that shows your immigration status online.

🕒 When You Get Your eVisa:

  • You’ll receive your decision letter first.
  • Then, you must create a UKVI online account to access your eVisa
  • If you already had a BRP issued before 31 Dec 2024, you need to set up your account before then. If you miss it, you can still do it later

❌ What If You Don’t Set It Up?

  • Your physical BRP expires on 31 Dec 2024 and won’t be accepted as proof of status after the grace period ends
  • Once the grace period ends, only the eVisa will work to show you can live, work, rent, or get services in the UK

🚨 What Should You Do Now?

  1. Create a UKVI account using your BRP or passport number, date of birth, email, and phone
  2. Link your passport to your eVisa so you can travel outside the UK and come back.
  3. Generate share codes from your account—these are used by landlords, employers, and doctors to check your status

📌 Keep Your Old Documents Safe

  • Keep any expired BRP cards until they’re no longer useful—they may help set up your eVisa or for future visa applications
  • Use your passport with your eVisa account when travelling—it remains your ID.

 ✅ Why This Is Better

  • eVisas are digital and more secure (you can’t lose them)
  • You’ll be able to prove your status online anytime, anywhere

⚠️ Important Note, If you plan to travel abroad before your BRP expires:

  • Carry your BRP and passport.
  • Set up your eVisa before returning to the UK

📌 Keep These Safe (Final Reminder)

✅ Save your decision letter and eVisa share codes. You will need them to:

  • Apply for housing 🏠
  • Get benefits or a job 💼
  • Register with a doctor 🏥
  • Open a bank account 🏦
