🚖 Using Taxis in Leeds
In Leeds, you can travel by taxi in two ways:
Book a taxi in advance (this is called a private hire taxi), or
Get a taxi from a taxi rank in the city centre.
🚕 Taxi Ranks in the City
There are taxi ranks on many main streets. You can usually find them outside places like the train station. Look for a sign that shows you where to wait. Only special taxis can pick people up from the street or taxi ranks. These are called Hackney Carriages. You can recognise them because they are:
White in colour
With black paint on the front and back (called the bonnet and boot)
These taxis are safe and legal. You do not need to book them in advance — just wait at a taxi rank and get in the next one.
📱 Booking a Taxi (Private Hire)
If you want to book a taxi, you can:
Use Uber
Search for a local taxi company on Google
Call a taxi company
Or use a taxi company’s app
Private hire taxis look like normal cars, but they must show:
The name of the company
A sign that says the taxi is licensed by Leeds City Council
✅ You can also ask for:
A large taxi for up to 6 people
A taxi with wheelchair access
✅ Staying Safe When Using Taxis
Most taxis and drivers are safe. But here are some tips to help you stay extra safe:
Only use Hackney Carriages (white with black ends) from the street
Or only get in a taxi that you booked in advance
Check the driver’s badge – it shows they are licensed
Do not wait alone for a taxi at night
Try to share a taxi with friends
If you’re alone, it’s better to sit in the back seat
