👶 How to Register Your Baby in Leeds (Step-by-Step Guide)
If you’ve just had a baby in Leeds — congratulations! 🎉 Now there are a few important things to do. Don’t worry, we’ll walk you through it 👣
📝 Registering the Birth
📅 You must register your baby’s birth within 42 days (that’s 6 weeks) by law. You must register with Leeds City Council.
👪 Who Can Register?
- If you are married, either one of you can go alone or you can go together.
- If you are not married, both parents need to go together. If only one parent can go, it must be the mother.
🧾 What You’ll Need:
- Baby’s full name
- Baby’s date of birth
- Your full name, birthday, address, and job
- Same details for the other parent
🪪 You’ll also need to bring:
- Photo ID (like a passport, driving licence, or residence card)
- Birth certificates (yours and the other parent’s, if possible)
📜 If the father goes with the mother and is named on the birth certificate, he will get parental responsibility (legal rights for the baby). If he’s not named and not married to the mother, he won’t have those rights.

🏥 Registering Your Baby with a GP
🩺 It’s important to register your baby with your GP (doctor) as soon as you can. When you register the birth, you’ll get a pink card.
✍️ Sign it and either:
- Take it to your GP
- Or post it to your GP
📍If you haven’t registered the birth yet, that’s OK — just go to the GP surgery and ask to fill out a registration form.
