🏡 How to Get Rid of Your Household Waste in Leeds ♻️🚮
It’s very important to throw away your rubbish the right way. This helps you, your neighbours, and the environment 🌍💚.
🗑️ Types of Bins in Leeds
Most homes in Leeds have 2 or 3 bins. Leeds City Council comes to empty them. If you live in a flat or shared house, you may share a big bin with others. Here are the bin types:
✅ Green Bin = Recycling ♻️

❌ Black Bin = General Rubbish 🗑️
Use this bin for:
- Food waste 🍞🍌
- Nappies 👶
- Other waste that can’t be recycled
🕐 Emptied once a week.
⚠️ Don’t put some things (like big items or electronics) in this bin. You must take them to a Council tip.

🍂 Brown Bin = Garden Waste (Only in some areas)
For grass, leaves, small branches, etc. Not everyone has a brown bin.

🚛 Putting Your Bins Out
🗓️ Your bin day (collection day) depends on where you live. Check your bin day here: Check Your Bin Day
✅ Put your bin outside before 7am on bin day.
✅ Take it back the same day after it’s emptied.
📍 Special Rules in Some Areas
These areas have extra rules (called Public Space Protection Orders – PSPO), if you live in:
- Armley
- Parts of Burley
- Harehills
- Headingley
- Hyde Park
- Little London
- Little Woodhouse
- Parts of Woodhouse or Woodhouse Moor
🚫 Don’t put your bin out before 6pm the day before collection
🚫 Don’t leave your bin out after 9am on collection day
❗If you break these rules, you could be fined £100.
⚠️ Important Bin Rules
- Make sure the black bin lid closes properly.
- Don’t leave bags next to or on top of the bin, they won’t be taken.
- Wait until after collection to add more rubbish inside the bin.

The council can come and collect big things if you can’t take them to a tip. It can take a long time and has rules.

🚫 What You Must NOT Do
❌ Fly-tipping = Illegal Dumping, never leave rubbish or big items on the street or public land. This is called fly-tipping and you can get a fine.

❌ Littering
🚬 It is illegal to drop litter and cigarettes in a public place, including on the streets outside your house. If you are caught, you could be fined a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100.

🐶 Rules for Dog Owners in Leeds
If you have a dog, follow these rules:
- 🐕 All dogs over 8 weeks must have a microchip – or you could be fined up to £500
- 🏷️ Dogs in public must wear a collar and tag with your name and address – or you could be fined up to £5,000
- 💩 Pick up your dog’s poo – or you’ll be fined £100
- 🚶 You can walk up to 4 dogs at the same time
- 🦮 Dogs must be on a lead on pavements and near roads, and under control at all times
