There are other services you can use instead of or as well as a GP practice when you’re unwell or have an injury. 

It’s important to choose the right service so you:

  • Free number 
  • Open 24/7 
  • Trained staff will help you 
  • Can help find evening/weekend doctor appointments or emergency dentists 
  • Ask for an interpreter if needed

💊 Pharmacies 

Pharmacies do more than give you medicine. You can: 

  • Get medicines with a prescription from a GP or nurse 
  • Buy everyday medicine (paracetamol, cold/flu pills) without a prescription 
  • Get health advice about common problems like: 
  • Coughs, colds 
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea 
  • Cuts, grazes, minor burns 

Many are open late and on weekends.

📅 You may need to wait 10–20 minutes for prescriptions. Some may ask you to collect medicine the next day. 

💳 You may have to pay unless you qualify for free prescriptions: 

  • Under 16 (or under 19 in full-time education) 
  • Aged 60+

  • Certain medical conditions

🦷 Dentists 

You can go to any NHS dentist without registering. Just phone them to check for appointments. 

📅 You must pay unless: 

  • Under 18 (or 19 and in full-time education) 
  • Pregnant or had a baby in last 12 months 
  • On low-income benefits 
  • Treated in a hospital by an NHS dentist

🚫 Not all NHS dentists are taking new patients. You might need to wait or try another dentist. Private dentists cost more.

👁️ Opticians 

NHS recommends an eye test every 2 years. Opticians: 

  • Test your eyes 
  • Check for eye problems 
  • Sell glasses/contact lenses

🚑 Urgent Treatment Centres (UTC) 

Go to a UTC if you need urgent care but it’s not life-threatening. They help with: 

  • Cuts/grazes 
  • Minor burns or wounds 
  • Sprains or minor broken bones (X-ray available) 
  • Rashes, infections 
  • Fever, vomiting 
  • Minor back or eye injuries 
  • Emergency contraception 
  • Urine infections
